Home Smoke Alarm Program

MUSKOKA LAKES - We are not quite half way through the month of January and there have already been a number of fire related deaths and injuries in the Province of Ontario. These tragedies are a very somber reminder of how things can go wrong when we least expect them to. No one is immune from the devastating impacts of a fire, and the common expression “it won’t happen to me” is a myth.

Muskoka Lakes Fire Chief, Richard Hayes says, “The devastation that fires have brought to these families is unimaginable. The pain and suffering surviving family members have to endure is heart breaking”. The Muskoka Lakes Fire Department would like to remind residents that it is critical to have working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, along with a practiced home escape plan, to give you and your family the best chances of surviving an emergency. “We want our residents to know that we provide a Home Smoke Alarm Program, and we encourage everyone, if needed, to utilize this program”, states Hayes.

The Home Smoke Alarm Program was developed a few years ago as part of the Fire Departments Public Education Program. The program offers in-home inspections to educate and promote fire safety, testing of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, providing literature on home escape planning, smoke and carbon monoxide alarm maintenance, and installing a free working smoke or carbon monoxide alarm if required. Furthermore, we want to remind residents it is still the responsibility of the homeowner first and foremost to insure they have working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms installed in their home.

If you would like to utilize the Home Smoke Alarm Program, please contact Fire Prevention Officer, Douglas Holland at to set up an appointment.
