Muskoka Lakes Launches Downtown Enhancement Project

The Township of Muskoka Lakes is excited to launch a Downtown Enhancement Project for the urban centres of Port Carling and Bala with support from Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA). “Downtowns are the heart of the community”, says Corey Moore, Communications & Economic Development Specialist for the Township. “Several downtown improvements have been proposed over the years. The goal of this project is to create an action plan that can realistically be implemented over the coming years.”

“Next we need to collect information from residents in the community”, says Corey. “We encourage residents to fill out the online survey and provide input on our current downtowns. This is an opportunity to express what you like, don’t like or think is missing.” This short survey will take approximately 5 minutes to complete and will be available online until November 30, 2017.

Why Should Residents Participate?

  • Give feedback on satisfaction with current state of the downtowns and opportunities to improve them to better meet your needs;
  • Identify specific and/or immediate needs and concerns that we can help you address;

Residents can participate in the survey via one of the following methods:

The Downtown Enhancement Project is being undertaken to help improve the economic, physical and social well-being of the two urban centre downtowns. “The project will leverage the resources of OMAFRA’s Downtown Revitalization Program”, said Catherine Oosterbaan, Regional Advisor for OMAFRA. This project specifically will be looking at ways to generate more traffic downtown, especially in the seasons outside of summer in line with the Township’s Economic Development Strategy.

A working group made up of a mix of staff, business owners and residents has been formed to help guide the project and decisions. A business survey was conducted in August and September. Specific goals and actions will be developed and linked to the researched data to provide directions moving forward. Once the research component is complete, the Township and its partners will begin implementation and monitoring of the identified actions.
