FIRE RATING

  

Issued Monday May 13, 2013 - The Fire rating is now set at MODERATE. 

Small fires are permitted in most rural areas of Muskoka keeping in mind that no daytime burning is allowed. You must have adequate tools and water to extinguish the fire if the need arises and you must be with your fire at all times. Consult with your local Fire Department for outdoor burning regulations in your municipality.

The Muskoka Fire Danger Rating is determined using the Fire Weather Index (FWI), an internationally used method for determining the risk of fires in open air. It uses factors such as the relative humidity, temperature, previous 24-hour rain amount, wind directions and wind speed in combination with the forest fuel type and loads to determine the risk of the forest to certain fire types. From this calculation the Forest Fire Danger

Rating is made in consultation with the Fire Chiefs of the six area municipalities and the Ministry of Natural Resources.

This is the Forest Fire Danger Rating for Restricted Fire Zone RFZ 27 (District of Muskoka). The Muskoka Fire Season runs April 1st to October 31st each year. The Forest Fire Danger Rating is verified daily and is updated whenever the rating changes.

BURNING

There is no daytime burning allowed within the Township of Muskoka Lakes from April 1 to October 31

No contractors shall set or maintain a fire in the open air without a valid permit from the Township of Muskoka Lakes. Where a permit has been issued to a contractor by the Township of Muskoka Lakes, or when burning is carried out during the period from April 1st - October 31st inclusive, the contractor shall comply with the following regulations:
    1. The fire must be under constant supervision and controlled from the time of lighting until it is totally extinguished.

    2. The fire shall be located no closer than 15 metres, (50 feet), from any building, structure, hedge, fence, road or overhead wire or obstruction of any kind.

    3. There must be a space of at least 4.5 meters, (15feet) free and clean of combustible material around the perimeter of such fire.

    4. The fire shall not be burned when the wind velocity exceeds 16 kph, (10 mph).

    5. The dimensions of the fire shall not exceed 3 meters (10 feet), indiameter or 2 meters, (6 feet), in height.

    6. No person shall allow or permit a fire to become out of control.

The Ministry of Natural Resources is committed to reducing preventable causes of human-bear conflict in Ontario. The Bear Wise Program teaches people about black bears as well as things they must do to keep bears away from urban and semi urban areas.
