With an aim to protect public Health and Safety and building occupants, the Development Services Department is responsible for the administration of the provisions of the Building Code Act and Ontario Building Code.

This responsibility involves the processing of:

  • building permit applications,
  • performing residential zoning bylaw compliance reviews,
  • issuing building permits,
  • conducting building and sewage system inspections,
  • addressing building code and construction related inquiries from the public
  • the enforcement of provisions of the municipal zoning bylaw when the construction of buildings under permit or requiring a permit are involved.

If you have a well on your property, you are responsible for it. You must follow specific rules for maintaining and, if necessary, abandoning a well to help protect the safety of your water and the groundwater resource. Wells fall under the jurisdiction of the Provincial Government through Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change. For more information about wells follow the link Wells and Septic Systems above.

This department also administers a successful Sewage Re-inspection Program (discretionary maintenance inspections), to ensure the safe and healthy operation of private onsite sewage systems within the Township of Muskoka Lakes and the testing of the water supplies of municipal public buildings, under the Safe Drinking Water Act 2002 and the Health and Protection and Promotion Act.
