Preventing False Alarms

Carbon Monoxide detector alarm

If you are experiencing issues with your alarm system, don't delay,  contact your alarm company immediately:

  • Ensure all users are trained on the alarm activation, deactivation and by-pass procedures for your alarm system.
  • Have your home alarm system annually inspected to make sure the devices, including the panel and backup batteries, are functioning properly.
  • Make sure that your alarm company has the proper address of your home or cottage and verify they have up-to-date contact information for key-holders
  • Test your alarm system connection with the central monitoring station monthly. Contact your monitoring company prior to testing and after to verify the signal is received.
  • Any time that contractors are on-site working, place the system on a by-pass for the duration of time they are there, this includes painters; unless your system is a commercial system then you must follow the procedures in your fire safety plan.
  • Any time you have cleaners on site, put the system on by-pass as dirt, dust, and debris can set the devices off; unless your system is a commercial system then you must follow the procedures in your fire safety plan.
  • Make sure that all devices installed throughout the building(s) are in the proper location and indicated on the alarm panel where the device is located.
