Road Permits/Applications

Road running through a rocky outcropping in autumn

The Operational Services Department oversees various permits and applications specific to road operations. All applicable permits must be issued and applicable fees paid prior to an applicant proceeding with any work on Town property. Once received, we review the application for consideration. Processing time is 5-10 business days. Fees associated with permits and applications are included in the Fees and Charges By-Law.

  •  A road closure may be needed for community events, repairs, or infrastructure improvements. If you require a temporary road closure, you are required to fill out an Application for Temporary Road Closure/Usage
  • If you are doing work and need to occupy part of a township road, a Roadway Occupation Permit is required.
  • You must obtain a Certificate of Liability Insurance naming the Township as additional insured in order for your application to be considered for approval.
  • You must submit your application at least 60 days prior to your proposed event.
  • If your Temporary Road Closure involves a District Road, please fill out an application with the District of Muskoka and direct inquiries to their Engineering and Public Works Department at 705-645-6764.

How to Apply

  • Complete an Application for an Entrance Permit
  • Submit your completed application and required documents to the Operational Services Department at the municipal office
  • Pay the required performance bond.

** The Township does not issue entrance permits for applications received between November 1 and April 15. Snow conditions cause entrance permit inspections to not be possible during the winter months.

Fee

A $750 performance bond is required when applying for an entrance permit. A refund of $200 will be returned when the municipality has approved the installed entrance. The remaining $550 is kept for the permit fee. Payment is by cash, cheque, debit, Visa or Mastercard. Please note: Visa and Mastercard payments are subject to a service charge. Credit cards other than Visa and Mastercard are not accepted. Electronic payments are not accepted.

As per By-Law 2022-140, all properties in Muskoka Lakes are required to have a 911 address. These numbers and blue reflective signs are your assurance that your property can be located in the event of an emergency.

If your land is undeveloped but is accessed for other purposes (hunting, camping, etc.), or if you are clearing trees for a future build, a 911 sign is required so that Emergency Services can find the property quickly.

If you are applying for a building or entrance permit and there is not already a number assigned, please request one from Operational Services before starting any work on the property. A site plan showing the entrance location is required.

If your property is on a private road, please ensure that any changes to the road’s structure or entrances are reported to the Township in order to ensure that the proper civic address sequence is maintained.

Installation

Your 911 number plate must be installed in a prominent location to be clearly visible from the primary access point to your residence (road or water). View our installation guidelines for more details.

Fee

You can purchase a new or replacement 911 civic address blade and post from the Operational Services Department during regular operating hours. The following rates apply:

  • Blade: $25.00 +HST
  • Post: $35.00 +HST

Contact the Operational Services Department by email or 705-765-3156 ext. 252 for information.
