Fire Danger Rating upgraded to EXTREME in Muskoka; Fire Ban in Effect

MUSKOKA LAKES, ON, July 15, 2026 – The Fire Danger Rating in the Township of Muskoka Lakes has been upgraded to EXTREME and is in a total fire ban, effective today.

New Rating (EXTREME) – what this means:

• Total Fire Ban, no open-air burning is permitted
• All current fire permits are suspended
• Fireworks are prohibited

Residents and visitors are urged to continue taking necessary precautions to reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires. Click here to learn about being FireSmart at home.

The Forest Fire Danger Rating is made in consultation with the Fire Chiefs of the six area municipalities in the District of Muskoka and the Ministry of Natural Resources. The Muskoka Fire Danger Rating is determined using the Fire Weather Index (FWI), an internationally used method for determining the risk of fires in open air. It uses factors such as the relative humidity, temperature, previous 24-hour rain amount, wind directions and wind speed in combination with the forest fuel type and loads to determine the risk of the forest to certain fire types. From this calculation the Forest Fire Danger Rating is made in consultation with the Fire Chiefs of the six area municipalities and the Ministry of Natural Resources.
