Fire Danger Rating upgraded to HIGH in Muskoka

MUSKOKA LAKES, ON, July 2, 2026 – The Fire Danger Rating in the Township of Muskoka Lakes has been upgraded to HIGH, effective today.

Residents and visitors are urged to continue taking necessary precautions to reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires. Click here to learn about being FireSmart at home.

New Rating (HIGH) – what this means:

• Daytime burning is prohibited, including all contractor fires
• All current open-air fire permits are suspended, and no new permits will be issued
• Fireworks are strictly prohibited, and any display firework permits are void
• Small, confined fires are permitted in the evening (6 p.m. until 8 a.m. the following morning) without a permit. Exercise extreme caution with all open flames. Always have adequate water and tools available to extinguish your fire if needed, and never leave a fire unattended.

The Forest Fire Danger Rating is made in consultation with the Fire Chiefs of the six area municipalities in the District of Muskoka and the Ministry of Natural Resources. The Muskoka Fire Danger Rating is determined using the Fire Weather Index (FWI), an internationally used method for determining the risk of fires in open air. It uses factors such as the relative humidity, temperature, previous 24-hour rain amount, wind directions and wind speed in combination with the forest fuel type and loads to determine the risk of the forest to certain fire types. From this calculation the Forest Fire Danger Rating is made in consultation with the Fire Chiefs of the six area municipalities and the Ministry of Natural Resources.
