Covid-19 Update

To continue to stop the spread of Covid-19, and out of an abundance of caution, the Township has cancelled the 2020 Summer Swimming Program. With advice from the Medical Officer of Health, the Township determined that it could not deliver the program and ensure the health and safety of the participants, staff, and community. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Summer Swimming Lessons

The Township of Muskoka Lakes offers swimming lessons during July and August.

Lessons follow the curriculum of the Canadian Red Cross Swim Preschool, Red Cross Swim Kids and the Lifesaving Society Lifesaving programs. For more details on the curriculum, view the Red Cross Swim Guides or Lifesaving Society website to read about their programs.

Adult lessons may be available upon request. On days with inclement weather, lessons are still held.

Registration

Register and pay online or print and complete a registration form and bring it to the Township office during regular office hours for processing. We accept cash, debit or cheque as payment methods. The Township office is open Monday to Friday, 8:15 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. 

2020 Swimming Sessions

  • All sessions include 9 days of classes. 
  • There are no lessons on Canada Day (July 1st) or the Civic Holiday (August 3th).
  • Course schedule is tentative dependent on enrollment. Hours may vary within a half hour span.

Program Details and Prices

Preschool

All swim participants (exclusive of the Preschool Sea Turtle Lessons) must be a minimum of three years of age, toilet trained and not in diapers at the commencement of the swim program.

Sea Turtle (with caregiver)

A great way to introduce toddlers to swimming in the lake. Working with their parent/caregiver, toddlers learn through fun games and songs and practice submersion, floats, glides, kicking and front swim.

Age: 2-3 years, participating with a parent or caregiver

Prerequisite: None

Price: $60

Sea Otter

Toddlers are introduced to swimming in the lake in a fun and relaxed environment, without assistance from a parent/caregiver. Swimmers work on front and back floats and glides, kicks and front swim.

Age: 3-5 years

Prerequisite: None

Price: $60

Salamander

Swimmers work on improving their front and back float and jumping into chest-deep water unassisted. Kicking is added to the front and back glide.

Prerequisite: Sea Otter

Price: $60

Sunfish

Swimmers work on kicking and can perform glides (front and back), enter deep water safely, float in deep water, swim with a PFD, and build endurance.

Age: 3+ years

Prerequisite: Salamander

Price: $60

Crocodile

Swimmers further develop the front and back glide with kick, front and back swim, jump into deep water, swim with a PFD in deep water, and build endurance.

Age: 3-6 years

Prerequisite: Sunfish

Price: $60

Whale

Swimmers increase their distance on front and back glide with kick, increase distance on front and back swim, learn the sitting dive, and build endurance.

Age: 3-6 years

Prerequisite: Crocodile

Price: $60

Children's Program – Swim Kids

All swim participants (exclusive of the Preschool Sea Turtle Lessons) must be a minimum of six years of age.

Level 1

A great way to introduce children to swimming in the lake. Swimmers develop front and back float, front and back glide, flutter kick (assisted), shallow water entries and exits.

Prerequisite: None

Price: $60

Level 2

Swimmers learn front and back glide with flutter kick, develop front swim, complete deep-water activities (assisted) and build endurance.

Prerequisite: Level 1 OR Preschool Sunfish

Price: $60

Level 3

Swimmers increase their distance on front and back glide with flutter kick, perform flutter kick unassisted, wear a PFD in deep water, float in deep water, and build endurance.

Prerequisite: Level 2 OR Preschool Crocodile

Price: $60

Level 4

Swimmers learn back swim with shoulder roll and front crawl, work on flutter kick on back, perform kneeling dive, introduction to sculling and build endurance.

Prerequisite: Level 3 OR Preschool Whale

Price: $60

Level 5

Swimmers develop front crawl, learn back crawl and whip kick on back, learn stride dive and treading water, perform head-first sculling on back, and build endurance.

Prerequisite: Level 4

Price: $60

Level 6

Swimmers increase their distance on front and back crawl, learn elementary back stroke, learn dolphin kick, tread water in deep water, perform front dive, and build endurance.

Prerequisite: Level 5

Price: $60

Level 7

Swimmers increase their distance on front and back crawl and elementary back stroke, learn front scull, perform whip kick on front and dolphin kick, learn stride entry and build endurance.

Prerequisite: Level 6

Price: $60

Level 8

Swimmers increase their distance on front and back crawl and elementary back stroke, learn breast stroke, learn eggbeater/tread water, perform feet-first surface dive and standing shallow dive, and build endurance.

Prerequisite: Level 7

Price: $60

Level 9

Swimmers increase their distance on front and back crawl, elementary

back stroke and breast stroke, learn sidestroke kick, perform head-first surface dive, and build endurance.

Prerequisite: Level 8

Price: $60

Level 10

Swimmers increase their distance on front and back crawl, elementary back stroke and breast stroke, learn sidestroke, perform dolphin kick (vertical), learn surface dives with underwater swim, and build endurance.

Prerequisite: Level 9

Price: $60

Lifesaving Program

Leadership Courses may be offered pending sufficient registration. These courses required additional course materials which may be purchased prior to the lesson start date or through the Township for an additional fee.

Rookie Patrol

The first of Lifesaving Society's 3-level Canadian Swim Patrol program provides enriched training for those who want to develop swim strokes and skills while having fun in the challenging world of lifesaving.

Prerequisite: Level 10 or equivalent

Price: $60

Ranger Patrol

The second of Lifesaving Society's 3-level Canadian Swim Patrol program provides enriched training for those who want to develop swim strokes and skills while having fun in the challenging world of lifesaving.

Prerequisite: Rookie Patrol or equivalent

Price: $60

Star Patrol

The third of Lifesaving Society's 3-level Canadian Swim Patrol program provides enriched training for those who want to develop swim strokes and skills while having fun in the challenging world of lifesaving.

Prerequisite: Ranger Patrol or equivalent

Price: $60

Bronze Star

Excellent preparation for success in Bronze Medallion. Participants develop problem-solving and decision-making skills individually and in partners. Candidates learn CPR and develop the lifesaving skills needed to be their own lifeguard.

Prerequisite: Level 10, Star Patrol Recommended

Price: $80

Bronze Medallion & Emergency First Aid

Teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water-rescue education – judgment, knowledge, skill and fitness.

Prerequisite: Minimum 13 years of age at time of registration or Bronze Star

Price: $170

Bronze Cross

Designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training. A prerequisite for all advanced training programs including National Lifeguard and Instructor certification.

Prerequisite: Bronze Medallion & Emergency First Aid

Price: $160
